Second shooting at Weddings is something that I really enjoy, and have recently had the chance to work with a local Nottingham photographer that has helped me pick up some tricks of the trade from his years of experience.
Second shooting is a difficult balance between making sure the main photographer has everything they need to get the shot, making sure lights are set in the right place, scouting out potential places around the venue for photographs, making sure the right equipment is to hand; It can be exhausting but also rewarding.
The other side of second shooting is actually taking pictures. Whilst the main photographer gets the main angles and has the attention of the important people on the day, as a second shooter it gives me the chance to get shots that the main photographer cannot get as they are off doing bridal portraits or liaising with the groom and his groomsmen or are at an angle capturing a different shot. I'm there to capture a different type of shot.
I can see why some professional photographers are reluctant to use second shooters; it can complicate the day, the last thing you want is for your second shooter to be in the back of a really important shot. However, I really think that a good second shooter is fully aware of what is happening through the day and is constantly aware of the location of the main photographer so being in the shot is something that I do avoid.
